The idea for writing this book came from my personal experiences as a child growing up in Lake Charles, Louisiana during the Great Depression of the 1930s and 1940s and my teenage and adult experiences. I witnessed firsthand the joys, humiliations, hardships and struggles that women had to endure for their families. I wanted to recount what I experienced during this time period. It has given me a feeling of joy and achievement to put my experiences over the years into writing I hope the younger generations will gain knowledge of our past and take note of our experiences for their future.

Just had to tell you how much I enjoyed Melvin's book. What a wonderful tribute to Strong, Beautiful, African American Women. Paul, it was such a joy to see all the photos, especially your mother, grandmother, (Mamee'), Aunt Aimee, and your sisters, Dorothy and Lucille.
My congratulations to Melvin as well as you, Paul for a job well done and a beautiful endeavor. Succinctly , much is conveyed in this book “Strong, Beautiful African American Women ,” about emotions and feelings that are SOUL deep, it’s refreshing on many levels, re-informing many of us of days long since gone, days when many of our heroines hardly knew that their activism and heroism was burning a path to today, Melvin has constructed a blueprint and in it’s legend are the likes of some of the most influential people that he’s ever encountered,. Funny and sad all the same are the hurts and shames of our individual and collective past that I encountered reading these passages that somehow transported me back to the youth of people whose lived at least one century before me, it seems moreover a simple and ever-present occurrence that Jesus; the light of the world hasn’t ever not come to either of our rescues! It has been a great privilege and honor to have known Mr. Melvin Ryan for many years. His unwavering devotion to God, warm and inviting demeanor, passion and compassion for people, and his unmatched regard and respect for black women are an inspiration and motivation to live life in relation to others in a truly loving way. The writings in this work are empowering, inspirational, challenging and comforting. For anyone who reads this work, the journey will be powerful as they walk the path of a life that has witnessed more than most will ever learn, a life that has witnessed and lived racial segregation and voted for the first African-American president in the United States, a life that have seen black women rise from marginalized status to the most education demographic in the United States, a life that truly is many lives in one. The writings in this work tell the story of strong, beautiful African-American women and the amazing legacy that they’ve bequeathed to their families, their race, and indeed this world. Mr. Ryan has dropped a golden nugget into the lives of all who read this work, and I thank him for it. I sincerely hope that all will read and glean from it the wisdom of a true sage, but I especially hope this for young African-Americans, particularly our young men.
